You may be thinking, what does computing power and the research conducted for a medical cure have to do with each other?

One of the world’s leading teaching and research institutions, Stanford University, has used its renowned facilities to set up an amazing worldwide distributed computing cluster for their groundbreaking work on supporting science finding a vaccine to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). For this, they require a large amount of computing power. Many technology companies worldwide and big universities can donate computing power to help with this research.

How does this work?

Launched in 2000, Folding@Home, a crowdsourced project run by Stanford University brings together scientists from around the world who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics by using the underutilized GPU and CPU of personal computers provided by individuals as well as institutions worldwide to form a crowdsourced supercomputer.

The project then carries out research to fight and find cures to diseases like Cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Influenza, and many more.

With the COVID-19 outbreak, Folding@Home is now serving as a platform for close to a million devices globally. Their goal is to serve a million devices worldwide to help scientists speed up their research in finding potential cures for the novel COVID-19.

How are we helping?

Our expertise lies in programmatic and data science. Our Amsterdam office has a number of large scale servers for the work we do with our clients to build technology based solutions such as custom algorithms, data visualization and API integrations for higher efficiencies in advertising.

The CTO of Bidmath, Rémon van Riemsdijk, is leading the project by leveraging our large server farm and configured 10 of our powerful computers to act as a ‘supercluster’ to support the project and help speed up the research.

Join us and speed up the research for the cure!

This week, the Folding@Home project reached the 1 ExaFLOPS mark of computing power, which is more than 4x the peak performance of the Summit supercomputer. If you are a technology or IT company you can join the initiative too and together we can contribute our computing powers to a great, life changing cause.
